What Do You Do When All The Doors Seem Closed?

What do you do when all the doors seem closed, options dried up and thousands of jobs are being shed? Simple. You just keep doing the next right and responsible thing.

You remind yourself of this FACT: “Opportunities are everywhere.” This affirmation from John Kehoe, author of Mind Power, reminds us that the universe is abundant. Even when little visible evidence exists for this.

At one point in my career in HR, the door to a new career and job only opened after 17 proposals to a senior client! No, I am not saying it's purely a numbers game. Job and career seeking is a combination of quality inner work and quality and quantity outer work. But it is persistent work. Faith work.

Practically, what do I do?

  • I keep knocking on as many targeted doors as possible.
  • I remain flexible and modify my proposals, CV, cover letter, my approach to clients, employers and my network.
  • I do a little everyday: a blog, a concept design, a proposal, some product development, read up on targeted businesses where I could find work opportunities, make a call, send my CV, post my CV online, write my network, post on Facebook/Twitter etc.
  • Treat myself for little victories.
  • Take time-out.
  • Go for a walk/run to energise and open to new ideas and perspectives.
  • Journal my lessons.
  • Use my diary and set goals (e.g. make 5 calls a day).
  • Search online and in journals, newspapers and community bulletins.

...and lots more ideas and tips at Job-Search Links.

“Opportunities are everywhere.”

Believe this and act accordingly.

With great expectation,

Peter Guess
